“Ha Long Bay on Land”
If you’re short on time in Hanoi but want to maximize your day, a trip to the Ninh Binh region is a perfect option. Located just 100 Km south of Hanoi, Ninh Binh is rich in natural beauty, cultural heritage, and history.
A day trip to Ninh Binh provides a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of Hanoi, combining adventure, history, and stunning landscapes. Whether you are cruising through tranquil waterways or hiking to breathtaking viewpoints, Ninh Binh promises an unforgettable experience.
With its mesmerizing landscapes of lush green fields, towering limestone karsts, and ancient temples. Here’s a comprehensive guide to making the most of your day trip to Ninh Binh.
When is the best time to visit?
I experienced the start of the dry months from October to April when the temperatures typically cool down. Even in October, it was still a warm 28 degrees. The prime time to visit, however, is when the stunning lotus flowers are in full bloom from May to July.
Getting to Ninh Binh
An early start is essential for maximizing your time in Ninh Binh. You can take a train or bus from Hanoi, which typically takes 2-2.5 hours. The best way is to take a private transfer or book a tour. I booked a tour with Hotel pick-up & drop-off in the Old Quarter of Hanoi.
Morning: Exploring the Historical and Cultural Sites
Hoa Lu Ancient Capital
Begin your adventure with a visit to Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam during the Dinh and Le dynasties in the 10th and 11th centuries. Nestled amidst stunning limestone karsts, Hoa Lu is home to several historical temples and pagodas.
The most notable are the Dinh Tien Hoang Temple and the Le Dai Hanh Temple, both dedicated to the emperors who once ruled this region. Stroll through the remnants of the old capital, soak in the rich history, and admire the traditional Vietnamese architecture.
Ride a bike
Cycling through the stunning landscapes of Trang An and Tam Coc was undoubtedly a highlight of my time in Ninh Binh. No need to stick to a specific route—simply venture down the scenic back roads and let the journey unfold naturally. For those who enjoy cycling, Am Tiên Lake is a popular and picturesque spot worth exploring.
Mid-Morning: A Scenic Boat Ride
Tam Coc – Bich Dong
Next, head to Tam Coc, often called “Halong Bay on land” because of its stunning scenery featuring limestone cliffs and peaceful waterways. Take a boat ride along the Ngo Dong River, where local rowers expertly navigate through the beautiful landscape.
As you glide over the water, you’ll pass lush rice paddies, dark caves, and impressive karst formations.
This was my first experience seeing people row a boat with their feet! It’s worth the ticket just for that.

Lunch
Local Delicacies
After the boat ride, it’s time to refuel with some delicious local cuisine. Ninh Binh is known for its goat meat dishes. Head to a nearby restaurant and enjoy specialities like goat meat with lemongrass, grilled goat, and goat hotpot. If you prefer something lighter, sample some of the region’s fresh spring rolls and crispy rice cakes.
Afternoon
Hang Mua (Mua Cave)
After lunch, make your way to Hang Mua, a hidden gem that offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views in Ninh Binh. The highlight of Hang Mua is the Mua Cave Viewpoint, which can be reached by climbing 500 steps carved into the mountainside.
The hike might be a bit challenging, but the reward is worth it. From the top, you’ll be greeted with breathtaking vistas of the Tam Coc valley, lush fields, and winding rivers. The perfect spot to catch your breath, capture stunning photos and enjoy a moment of tranquillity. Don’t forget a bottle of water and some sunscreen.
Bich Dong Pagoda
End your day with a visit to Bich Dong Pagoda, a charming pagoda complex nestled into the side of a mountain. Consisting of three levels Ha Pagoda (lower), Trung Pagoda (middle), and Thuong Pagoda (upper)
The site is both spiritually and visually captivating. Climb the stone steps to explore each level, and take in the serene atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. The highest pagoda is a fantastic viewpoint of the area
Evening: Return to Hanoi
Although one day may feel brief, proper planning can help you make the most of your visit to this beautiful region. Pack your bags, set your alarm early, and prepare for an unforgettable adventure in Ninh Binh—a must-visit while in Hanoi.
Experiencing all the top highlights of Ninh Binh in one day was truly unique. I spent the day exploring in an old army jeep, zooming through the picturesque rice fields on a Vespa, enjoying a serene boat ride through either Tam Coc or Trang An, and visiting various historical sights. The package included all entrance fees and delicious meals, making it a hassle-free and unforgettable adventure.
