Imagine waking up to the sound of rhythmic waves and the clip-clop of horse-drawn carriages instead of blaring car horns. You have arrived at Gili Trawangan (Gili T), the largest and most vibrant of the three Gili Islands, nestled off the coast of Lombok.

Whether you are a solo backpacker looking for the ultimate party or a couple seeking a turquoise escape, Gili T is likely at the top of your bucket list.

As the most famous of Indonesia’s Gili Islands, this tiny slice of paradise offers a unique blend of wild energy and total serenity.

This island delivers an experience that captures the heart of every traveller.

First, you must decide your starting point, as most travellers arrive from Bali or the mainland of Lombok. If you are coming from Bali, book a fast boat from Padang Bai or Serangan; the journey typically takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on sea conditions.

Meanwhile, if you are already exploring Lombok, the trip is even shorter. You can hop on a local public boat from Bangsal Harbour for a budget-friendly 20-minute ride, or opt for a private speedboat to arrive in style. Ultimately, stepping off the boat onto the white-sand beaches of Gili T feels like entering a different dimension where time slows.

Keep in mind that the boat ride can be rough if the weather is bad. When I went in June, I was lucky—the weather was clear, and the ride was calm, so we could sit outside and enjoy the fresh air.

Still, I’ve heard stories about rough trips that made people feel sick. If you get seasick easily, it’s advisable to take a seasickness tablet before you board.

To make the most of your adventure, plan your visit during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During these months, you will enjoy endless sunshine and crystal-clear turquoise waters.

Furthermore, if you prefer to avoid the massive crowds during the July-August peak season, consider May, June, or September. During these “shoulder” months, the weather remains perfect, but you’ll find it much easier to snag a prime spot at the best sunset bars in Gili T.

However, be mindful that the rainy season (November to March) can bring heavy tropical downpours that might dampen your snorkelling plans.

One of the most unique aspects of Gili T is the total absence of motorised vehicles. As a result, the air stays fresh, and the vibe remains incredibly laid back. To explore the island, you have three main options:

• Bicycle: Rent a bike from your hotel or a local vendor for a few dollars a day. It takes about an hour to cycle the entire perimeter.
• Cidomo are traditional horse-drawn carriages. They work well for moving heavy luggage from the jetty to your villa. I don’t recommend using them because of concerns about animal welfare, but if your accommodation is too far to walk, you may need to use one.
• Walking: Many of the best spots are within easy walking distance, especially if you stay near the main strip.

You cannot visit this island without experiencing the world-class snorkelling with sea turtles. Unlike its quieter neighbours, Gili Meno and Gili Air, Gili T offers a perfect blend of accessible reefs and vibrant marine biodiversity.

Head to the northeastern side of the island, often called “Turtle Point.” Here, you can simply swim out from the shore and encounter majestic Green and Hawksbill turtles gliding through the water. In addition to turtles, you will discover schools of colourful clownfish, vibrant coral gardens, and even the occasional reef shark. Similarly, many local operators offer “3-Island Snorkelling Tours” if you want to see the famous underwater statues off Gili Meno.

Accommodations Gili T caters to every budget and style. If you are in your 20s and looking for a social atmosphere, the eastern side of the island boasts lively hostels and boutique hotels. Conversely, those seeking a romantic escape should head to the “Sunset Side” (the west coast). Here, you will find high-end eco-resorts and private villas that offer peace and quiet.

If you want the perfect balance of proximity to the action and blissful quiet, you have to stay at the Pearl of Trawangan.

Located on the southeastern coast, this resort is a true gem that captures the island’s tropical spirit. Furthermore, it is just an 8-minute walk from the jetty, making it the fastest commute once you hop off the fast boat.

The setup here is iconic; the resort is tucked away behind lush gardens, but the Pearl Beach Lounge sits directly across the sandy path, right on the water’s edge.

I loved waking up in a rustic-luxe Lumbung cottage, walking “across the road” (which is really just a narrow lane for bikes and horses), and immediately sinking your toes into the sand for breakfast.

Why I love it

• The Bamboo Architecture: The beachfront restaurant features a stunning, curved bamboo design that feels like a work of art.
• Two Epic Pools: You can choose between the main lagoon pool—complete with a waterfall and swim-up bar—or a more secluded pool for a quiet dip.
• Semi-Open Bathrooms: Experience that “island life” feeling with a spacious, outdoor-style bathroom where you can shower under the stars.

Food & Nightlife The island is a culinary playground. For an authentic local experience, visit the Gili Trawangan Night Market. You can feast on fresh grilled seafood, Nasi Campur, and Sate for just a few dollars.

I have to give you a heads-up: Indonesian drug laws are incredibly strict. While the island can feel like a lawless paradise, the legal reality is no joke. If you decide to partake, stay with friends, be responsible, and remember that your safety is the priority. Stick to the natural high of the sunset if you want to play it safe!
